Filthy, but nice. I’ve worked on it a good bit, and it cuts well. Two things: first, how do you drain and add hydrolic fluid to the cylinder? Unscrew the cap and top it off? Hydrolics seems a bit mushy to me. Second, is there some way to determine when it was made? I got all the data on the plate, serial number, etc. Have been all over it and don’t see any other data.

I just obtained a 18” Great Western saw. It is a hydraulic feed. Is there a difference between hydraulic oil and hydraulic fluid? And what are some good hydraulic brands to use? Plus how full do I keep the hydraulic chamber? Thank You!

Andrew, I am so sorry I did not see your comment sooner. I have forwarded your question to Martin, who wrote the blog about the saw. Hopefully you will hear from him soon.

I just got the same saw! I put amber neutral light in it, and used tractor oil in the hydraulic feed. When I open the hood after a cut, a large amount of smoke or oil vapor is release which doesn’t seem right. I got the saw second hand and it had a new motor put on it. Could it be the pulley is wrong and spinning the blade too fast, or maybe the hydraulic seal on piston is bad and leaking tractor fluid into oil sump, which creates smoke? I’m going very slow with the feed rate, as well.

This means you should research a good place for it before buying. Once it is in place you don’t want to have to move it.
